Book reading a big hit among Malaysians
Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 15:10:00

KUALA LUMPUR: Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Rais Yatim is all smiles with more Malaysians taking up the book reading habit. He said the ministry recorded a whopping 38 million visitors to libraries nationwide, including those in public and private universities, exceeding the 28 million Malaysian population.

Rais said this at the launch of the "Mari Membaca 1Malaysia" programme this morning at the National Library in Jalan Tun Razak. Also present were Deputy Information Minister II Senator Heng Seai Kie and Malaysian National Library director-general Datuk Raslin Abu Bakar."Reading has become an enveloping habit for Malaysians with most reading an average of eight to 12 books per year," said Rais. He said his ministry was stepping up efforts to balance computer literacy and book reading habits as "the personal computer has become a competitor in the conventional knowledge seeking process". "It is good that people are going online to read but we must balance it out with book reading habits because we don't want our younger generation to be slaves to the computer monitor. Every three hours of computer usage should be balanced out with an hour of reading books."

The ministry plans to identify several personalities, such as former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Angkasawan Negara Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Sheikh Shukor and local celebrities, to find out their reading habits and portray them as icons for the book-reading programme. Dr Rais said it would be a good idea to get celebrities, such as actress Datuk Michelle Yeoh, to host a book club, just like America's top talk show host Oprah Winfrey. "We also want to encourage the growth of local book publishers, which in turn, will encourage the emergence of new local writers."
